Restore the Thaw
Restore the Thaw is a project run by Innovate Trust in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Countryside Team and funded by the Vale of Glamorgan’s Strong Communities Grant Fund. The project supports adults with learning disabilities to take part in environmental improvement work in the River Thaw catchment area.
About the project
Restore the Thaw started in January 2023 and was originally funded by the Cardiff and Vale Health Charity. We have now received funding from the Vale of Glamorgan’s Strong Communities Grant Fund to continue running this project until September 2024.
We are working alongside the Vale of Glamorgan Countryside Team to improve the biodiversity along the River Thaw in the Vale of Glamorgan. Activities will mainly take place at Porthkerry Park but also at Aberthaw Nature Reserve, Rhoose Point and at the Amelia Trust farm.
Our activities are mainly free of charge and priority is given to individuals who live in the Vale of Glamorgan. We encourage anyone to try the project – no matter what your previous experience or support needs are.
Project activities
Project activities include, but are not limited to
- Planting trees and hedgerows
- Building habitats for local wildlife such as otters, beavers and adders
- Creating ponds
- Carrying out wildlife surveys
- Monitoring plantlife
