During recent community sessions, Mike expressed an interest in volunteering at a local charity shop. Kath, a member of our Participation team, assisted Mike in making the first steps toward his goal.
Kath and Mike’s support team assisted Mike in helping him looking at different charity shops in the area. Mike and his team went on to speak with managers of various charity shops to find the perfect fit for him. Mike eventually found one he wanted to volunteer in – Cancer Research UK.
Once Mike had received an application form, his support team helped him to complete and return the form himself to Cancer Research UK. Following completion, Cancer Research UK invited Mike for a taster session at the shop, where he picked up on directions quickly. The shop manager asked him to come back the following week without his support team!
Mike has now been volunteering with Cancer Research UK once a week for over a month. The social aspect of the job has been a highlight for Mike. He loves being part of a team.
I’m really enjoying it. They are nice people I work with.
-Mike
He also enjoys spending time talking to a variety of different people within the shop. The Cancer Research UK team has helped Mike identify roles in which he excels. Mike takes inventory, sorts out stock and labelling items, placing them on the correct hangars ready to be put on the shop floor.
