Making our own LGBTQ+ history

25th of October 2023, one for the history books?

We had 19 members of our LGBTQ+ group join us our first meet up yesterday. It is fair to say it was a huge success.

The group started the day with a coffee and chat to get to know each other, before following the Lost LGBTQ+ Cardiff map to learn about some of the city’s rich LGBTQ+ history. We also discussed the accessibility of venues, and shared thoughts on the LGBTQ+ scene in Cardiff today.

The group was a mix of people we support, Innovate Trust and First Choice Housing Association team members, Skills and Volunteering Cymru volunteers, and Gareth from the House of Deviants.

We are so pleased to see the group so well-received, and we look forward to many more meetings in the future.

It was amazing learning things about being gay in Cardiff that I didn't know. I like to go out in Cardiff but do not know where to go so it is nice to see these places.

It is great this exists for people, things were difficult growing up but it's important for people to have groups like this

What is Innovate Trust’s LGBTQ+ group?

Innovate Trust’s LGBTQ+ group is a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ+ people to connect with others, share their experiences, and learn about LGBTQ+ history and culture. The group is also a valuable resource for information about LGBTQ+ events and information in Cardiff.

The importance of LGBTQ+ community groups

LGBTQ+ community groups can play a vital role in the lives of LGBTQ+ people. They can provide a safe and supportive space for people to connect with others, share their experiences, and learn about LGBTQ+ history and culture.

Community groups can also help to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues, and to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

It was really good, some of my drag queen friends are here too

I have met lots of new people today and some one I used to know years ago

Our next meet up

The group’s next social event is planned for 11th November, when they will see the House of Deviants perform at the Wales Millennium Centre.

If you are interested in joining the Innovate Trust LGBTQ+ group, please get in touch.
