Sport is a big part of Welsh life.

It is part of the national identity, a source of national pride and brings communities together.

This was no different in the late 19th and early 20th century. Sports like rugby and boxing were very popular in the Welsh valleys at the time.

Popular sports were a little different in St Fagans.

This was due to the Earl of Plymouth who lived in St Fagans Castle and who was a big sports fan himself.

We already know that The Earl of Plymouth played curling in the winter.

He was also a big cricket fan.

He donated land and money to create several cricket teams and grounds. He was even the president of the St Fagans and the Glamorgan County Cricket clubs.

Cricket wasn’t his only interest – he was also the president of the local lawn croquet and tennis clubs which he donated money and land to.

The gentry were interested in sports like cricket, croquet and tennis.

Whereas the working classes were keener on rugby, football and boxing.

We think this is due to the cost difference of both playing and watching these sports.

What do you think?

Does sport bring us together or divide us? Or is it both?
