For the past five years, Innovate Trust and Pedal Power have brought creativity and colour to the Butetown Carnival, and this year was no exception!
The workshops were sponsored by Wales Millennium Centre, which enabled us to once again link up with talented carnival artists Niki and Alice Fogaty The team have worked together over the weeks leading up to the Carnival, and created a truly epic display ready for the annual parade.
Every year, Niki and Alice go way above and beyond their budget and brief and we just can’t thank them enough. They really bring everything together, and keep everyone motivated, bringing out the creative energy in us all.

This year’s workshops brought together a talented and creative group from Innovate Trust, including Richard, Janet, Ray, Paul, Delyth, Annaliese, and Vince. They were joined by community members Stuart, Joyce, and Eleanor, as well as Rhys and Burham from Mirus, who accessed the workshops via the Insight App and links with other Innovate Trust-run outdoor groups. What a brilliant collaboration! ITV News even popped along one day to cover the activity, with the group later making the evening news.

The result of their efforts was a collection of fantastic sea-themed models, dominated by an enormous, four-sectioned blue sea-serpent.

The parade
On Carnival Day, Sunday, August 24th, this amazing creature was held up in the air, above Pedal Power’s adapted bikes. They did an incredible job, much to the delight of all the people who had gathered to witness the fantastic parade.

Annaliese, Delyth, Janet, Vince, Burham, Stuart, and Joyce did an amazing job parading the models. Tricky work when cycling, but they definitely pulled it off!
What a joy to be part of such an amazing event, bringing together communities and filling Cardiff’s Butetown with such vibrance, a highlight of our summer every year. Thank you so much to everyone who got involved and joined us, and for all the hard work. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!
