Independence, friendship and fun: Delyth’s journey with Innovate Trust

For nearly 8 years, Delyth has called an Innovate Trust household in Cardiff her home.

Moving into supported living is a significant milestone for any individual and their family. But for Delyth, it has been the start of a vibrant, busy, and fun chapter.

A happy home in supported living

Living in a lively part of Cardiff with one other housemate, Delyth has embraced the independence that supported living provides, backed by a dedicated team of staff and a family who remain her biggest champions.

An active life in Cardiff

Delyth is rarely one to sit still. Her week is anchored by her love for movement and music.

Attending 2 different weekly dance groups in Cardiff, dance and music definitely gets Delyth up and out the house!

She is a regular at the SVC Club Night! And will get involved with anything that means she gets to move and meet up with friends.

Staying connected through technology

Delyth’s iPad is one of her favourite tools for staying connected. With the support of her staff, she is an active user of Insight, Innovate Trust’s social media app, where she shares updates about her daily life.

The iPad is also great for revisiting her favourite programmes.

Delyth loves classic quiz shows like Deal or No Deal and Bullseye on YouTube, or scrolling through photos of her many adventures.

Getting out and about: cycling, beaches and carnival

Delyth also enjoys visits to Pedal Power for cycling and makes the most of her mobility car with trips to the beach during the summer months.

Every year, she becomes a key part of the Butetown Carnival. Leading up to the event, she joins an arts group organised by Innovate Trust and local artists Niki and Alice.

They meet weekly at Pedal Power to design and create a central part of the Carnival, eventually taking her place in the procession while her family cheers her on.

Strong family bonds

While Delyth has built a lovely life in her own home, her family remains the centre of her world.

Every Thursday, she has her weekly Zoom call with her family – something that started in lockdown, but has became a real event she looks forward to.

She shares a particularly close bond with her brother, Gethin, and loves showing everyone photos of him and telling us what he has been up to

The transition to supported living can be an emotional journey for parents, but Delyth’s family have become vocal advocates for the process.

They have even joined Delyth at events to speak about their positive experiences, highlighting the strong, collaborative relationship they share with the Innovate Trust team.

Home life, independence, and daily routines

When she is not out and about, Delyth loves the cosiness of home and finds joy in colouring, puzzles, and playing games.

All done surrounded by everything Disney, including souvenirs of her trips to Disneyland!

Delyth has a great rapport with her support team, who help her manage her activity board.

There is also a visual guide in the living room that outlines all her weekly activities, appointments, commitments and meals.

Delyth’s weekly routine includes:

  • Meal Planning: Delyth sits down with support team to choose recipes and plan her shopping.
  • Cooking: Inspired by her father’s love for cooking, she loves food and gets involved in the preparation of meals… with a bit of persuasion!
  • Befriending: Through the SVC Befriending scheme, Delyth welcomes a volunteer to her home for baking sessions and catch-ups.

Though she occasionally needs a gentle nudge to help with the housework, Delyth is truly proud of her home.

It is a place of safety, friendship, and constant activity, a testament to what supported living can achieve when a person is empowered to live life to the fullest.
