At Innovate Trust, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a place that truly feels like home.

Recently, our community member, Mark, has been instrumental in making this a reality for others.

He joined the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Regional Partnership Board Home Group to help co-develop the “My Dream Home” booklet.

A close-up photograph shows Mark standing in a doorway. He is dressed in an ornate black jacket featuring elaborate gold braided trim and buttons, worn over a purple shirt and tie. An old-fashioned metal mailbox is visible in the foreground to the left.

From ideas to impact

Mark’s journey began when Lisa French, Innovate Trust Participation Manager, approached him about the project.

Lisa recognised that Mark’s perspective, ideas, and lived experience would make him a fantastic asset to the project’s discussion panel.

The partnership working group aimed to develop a genuinely co-produced resource.

This provides people with learning disabilities the clear, accessible information they need to make empowered housing choices.

Mark regularly met with a diverse group of individuals, parents, carers, and professionals to determine their preferred approach.

Together, they decided which ideas to include in the guide.

Mark is seated in an audience at a launch or celebration event. He is wearing a dark suit and glasses, smiling as he looks through a physical copy of the "My Dream Home" booklet. Other attendees are seated nearby,

The name “My Dream Home” was chosen by people with learning disabilities. It serves as a powerful reminder of what home truly means.

Any house becomes a dream home when we have the freedom to choose how it looks, feels, and reflects who we are.

Inside, the booklet is practical guidance to help people feel in control of their choices and have meaningful conversations about where they live.

What the booklet achieves

The final result is a fantastic step-by-step guide for those considering a range of home options.

This booklet facilitates meaningful conversations to ensure support teams understand what makes a person happy.

It empowers individuals to show exactly how they want to be assisted in their daily lives.

Most importantly, it highlights what matters most to them in their home environment.

Leading by example: Mark’s film and advocacy

Mark is standing with a group of four other Innovate Trust employees behind a display table at an indoor event. The table is covered with various informational flyers and a laptop.

Mark’s contribution went beyond the creation of the booklet.

To provide a real-world example of independence, the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Regional Partnership Board helped Mark share his story in a short film.

Mark was more than happy to participate and offer reassurance to others. He hopes his story will truly benefit everyone who hears it.

Mark is dressed in a dark suit, white shirt, and tie, looking directly at the camera standing next to a large promotional banner at an event.
Mark is standing in the center of the room, looking at the camera. The room is brightly lit and tidy, reflecting a personalised and comfortable home setting. The wall behind him features a vibrant, yellow-patterned wallpaper with animal motifs. A large flat-screen television is mounted on this wall.

Through Mark’s story, viewers can see the high level of independence he maintains in his own home.

Mark also took a central role at the project’s launch event, presenting to large groups about the brochure’s value and the positive impact it will have on the community.

Mark’s perspective, ideas, and lived experience have made him a fantastic asset to the project’.

We immensely value Mark’s work with the Regional Partnership Board and all its partners. We are also thrilled to share that he is keen to continue his involvement in future projects.

Always on the move

When he isn’t advocating for better housing resources, Mark leads a vibrant and active life.

Mark is sitting on a brown leather sofa in his living room. He is holding a dark blue mug with a large white letter "M" on it. Behind him is a light-colored wall with a piece of colorful abstract art and a white fireplace mantle. A copy of the pink "My Dream Home" booklet is visible on a side table to his left.

Mark is a social butterfly who loves attending parties and community events. He is a regular participant at many Innovate Trust and SVC activities.

Throughout the week, he keeps busy with regular kickboxing classes.

He also volunteers at a local care home, where he enjoys keeping up with local news and meeting new people.
